DAY 2
PROJECT/UNIT DESCRIPTION/EXPEDITION: As the mad scientist you are, you have created your character in your lab. The next step is to take that character and begin building a space, or habitat, for it to live in! You have already been thinking about living spaces and habitats so you will be designing a room for your character based on the needs of it. There is no budget which means you can absolutely anything you want into this space! Before actually building this space, we will be drawing it out and painting it on a professional canvas for secret records. To do that we must first learn how to mix our own unique, special colors.
This is the prompt that the students receive and in this lesson they will carry over from last weeks class by painting their creatures environments onto canvases. There will also be a short activity on color mixing

ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING:
Decisions about art - making can be developed through engagement with art can lead to understanding and appreciation of self, others, the natural world, and constructed environments. |
INQUIRY/LEARNING TARGET:
I can understand color mixing and use it to paint my desired environment to match my given character. |
KEY CONCEPTS:
Space Color |
SKILLS:
Accurate and inventive color mixing Relating characteristics of one thing to its environment |
ART FOCUS:
Complete an acrylic painting on canvas using previous sketches |
LITERACY FOCUS:
Students will learn about the color wheel and complete a worksheet where they answer questions about their mixed colors |
DOCUMENTATION:
Below are pictures and videos of the students work in this class, they took the sketches they had for their characters environment and put them to a canvas. They used acrylic paints on canvas. The students were given only the three primary colors and black and white so they had to mix to achieve the majority of colors. They participated in a group demo/discussion on color mixing and then played around with their paint on canvases.

In this video the student talks about how she made the color teal. What she is describing involves a lot of experimentation and playing with the paints. She talks about mixing almost 5 different colors to create that one perfect color. The student is stretching and exploring and taking her prior knowledge about the color wheel and combining it with experimentation to create that exact color she needs to make her character's home special.

In this video the student is taking about the characteristics of his home and why it is the perfect environment for his character. The full conversation is not in this video but his character is a volcano monster who loves dogs. He lives in a volcano but he has a fire proof dog bed so that his dog will not burn up. The student has created details in his home/environment that reflects his character and makes his home very particular to him.
|
This video, like quite a few pictures, shows a plate completely covered in brown paint. When asked how he created this color the student replied, "by mixing all of my colors together". He then decided to label it "awesome brown". All of the students who did this were experimenting and taking risks with their art. They did not know what would happen when they mixed all the colors so they wanted to try it. Even though the color wheel demo discussed how to create brown and why mixing all colors together would make brown, a lot of the students would never have understood that until they saw it and the learning became a lot more concrete when they could do it themselves and experience it.

Above is the slideshow of the students paintings and processes during todays lesson.
Overall the lesson went very well, the demo was able to serve as the students assessment because they were asked questions about the color wheel and vocabulary associated and how to create any color they wanted. The student then had to find a way to create their colors with a limited palate that also had to relate to their character. The students were all asked about their environments and each of them was able to give answers about the relatable characteristics and why their characters would choose to call this environment home. Every lesson up to this date has been related and focused on their character and environment, the slight shift in topic or medium being used is keeping them engaged and excited for every lesson. They are already thinking ahead and asking us about future lessons and about when they will get their other projects back. The students are learning how to make and anticipate connections and how to really develop a topic they are excited about.
